Portland Organic Gardens delivers their weekly CSA shares in beautiful African baskets from a company called Baskets of Africa. Baskets of Africa is a Fair Trade company that represents unique baskets from throughout the African continent. These one-of-a-kind pieces of functional artwork are woven only by local African craftspeople. By promoting the weavers from various African nations, Baskets of Africa helps the weavers (especially women) with economic development. The weavers of Africa preserve their cultural heritage by weaving baskets in a traditional manner, as well as advancing themselves financially. Baskets of Africa are members of the Fair Trade Federation, an organization that shares the belief that indigenous people around the world should be compensated fairly for their amazing work. While Baskets of Africa is well known for the Ghana Bolgas or “Market Basket” they also ship a wide variety of Zulu Ilala Palm, Swazi Sisal and Zulu Wire baskets.
